After being a British colony Cyprus became independent in 1960. There were increasing tensions between the
Greek Cypriot majority and Turkish Cypriot minority. UN peacekeepers were deployed in 1964. In 1974 to counter
Greek intentions, Turkey sent troops to occupy the northern portion of the island. Historically, divided islands
have never fared well.  While Cyprus is not as disastrous a situation as Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the
Dominican Republic) it is difficult for us to see the point of the current configuration. Most estimates claim a cost
of nearly $3 billion dollars and 179 lives for the UN staff.
