There was relatively good news from a
seismic point of  view: no known fault in
the Bay of Gonaives (left) or along the
Windward Passage (top left edge)  or in
the Caribbean immediately south of Haiti.
The bad news: the northern coasts of
Haiti and the Dominican Republic follow
a seismically active fault - note the
cluster of dots to the top right. A second
fault also follows the southern coast of
Haiti. It is doubly difficult to convince
governments they should worry about a
major when they have no excess funds and
when there has been no notable seismic
activity for centuries. Having one's
capital and largest city on a fault is just
asking for trouble.
