There are thirteen islands totalling 25,000 people and 300 square kilometers in area. The
entire population of Tori shima, about 150 people, was killed in a volcanic eruption in 1902.
The island has never been re-settled. Volcanic activity forced the evacuation of Miyake-jima
in 2000. After five years residents were allowed to return to the island. There was a Richter
7.1 on August 9, 2009 at 33.122°N, 138.026°E followed by a 6.7 three days later.
