Normally, we are
only interested in
Richter 7.0 or
greater
earthquakes
beyond the last 40
years. We were
frankly a little
disappointed that
there was only
one older
earthquake in
Germany.
We note in passing that the orange dot in northeastern Austria is the famed
Neulengbach event of 9/15/1590. There is considerable uncertainly about its
strength. Estimates range from Richter 5.5 to 6.6. There were foreshocks that
started June 29 and aftershocks that ended November 12. Details of deaths,
injuries and damage, especially in Vienna, are scarce, although it is clear that the
southern portions of the Cathedral of St. Stephen were damaged. On the next
page we have an image from a town then known as Frankenstein.
