There is currently a plan
to deactivate ALL nuclear
reactors in Germany.
This will take
considerable engineering
talent both to safely
dismantle the power
plants and to scale up
other sources of
electricity such as solar.
Of interest to us mathematically were the reactors at Greifswald (pictured above),
Brokdorf, Stade, Brunsbüttel, and Unterweser. Greifswald in northeastern
Germany near the Polish border was originally planned to be eight (8) first
generation Soviet-designed pressurized water reactors known as WER 440s.
Prior to German reunification, four were completed and operating.
Construction was stopped on the fifth unit; the remaining three were canceled;
and the original four have been getting decommissioned since 1990. Accordingly,
we are not very concerned about a Baltic Sea tsunami - at least as far as Germany
is concerned.
