Home
On July 3rd, after the heroics of the 20th Maine and many others had managed to hold the Union left
and right, it would hardly take the insight of Hannibal to appreciate that General Lee would attack
the center. The attack was delayed for far too many hours. When the flower of the Southern infantry
finally assaulted it was much too late. While the Union lost about 1,500 killed and wounded, the
Confederate casualty rate was over fifty percent. Three Confederate divisions absorbed the brunt of
the casualties:  Pickett lost 498 killed, 643 wounded, 833 wounded and captured, and 681 captured.
Pettigrew's losses are estimated to be about 470 killed, 1,893 wounded, 337 captured. Trimble's two
brigades lost 155 killed, 650 wounded, and 80 captured. Wilcox's brigade reported losses of 200, and
Lang's about 400. Thus, total losses during the attack were nearly 7,000.  The Army of Northern
Virginia was finished as an offensive combat unit.
