We will see if recent publications
by Gabor Tokai, Benedek Lang,
and Levente Kiraly reveal either
fraud or an authentic albeit
difficult message. In the
meantime, there are many
aspects of modern day Romania
that are cryptic.

A page from the Codex Rohonczi also known as the Rohonc Codex. The codex has 448 paper pages and 87 illustrations. Debate has raged for more than 150 years as to whether it is a forgery. If not, are the almost 800 symbols an alphabet, a syllabary or perhaps logographs? There is no agreement about directionality (left to right or right to left or even bottom to top). The paper is probably Venetian from around 1530. There are quite a variety of explanations for the script and what language it represents. Accompanying text for the page to the left is
pag. 167. Cineva cu aripi (un om, un inger, un zeu) se roaga Soarelui (care e umanizat) pentru un om mort sau bolnav.
-- translated to English --
page 167. Someone with wings (one man, an angel, a god) asks the Sun (which is humanized) for dead or sick.
