I am not convinced yet that the thumb-like projection or the v-shape that it creates is all that effective at
snaring an opponent's sword and snapping the blade. The fighter with this saber would have to be very quick to
trap a sword blade and also very strong. To be sure, the trapping area is along the very strong spine of this weapon.
One conjecture is that on a lunge it serves to keep the blade from penetrating too far and getting entangled the
enemy’s ribs and other obstacles. It turns out that not all blades are made with this feature. Given the weight
challenges and balance problems I suspected that the Zhan Ma Dao really needed to have a long handle in the
manner of a Kwan Dao or Pu Dao.
