“En tant que savant, je me dois de vous fournir des travaux permettant des prédictions"
“As a scholar, I must provide you with works permitting predictions.”
Said to Napoleon Bonaparte by Pierre-Simon, Marquis de Laplace French mathematician (1749-1827)
In Western Africa a lion wakes up each morning knowing it must outrun the slowest
antelope or starve. An antelope (like the scimitar oryx [Oryx dammus] pictured to the
right, and thought to be extinct in the wild) wakes up each morning knowing it
must outrun the fastest lion
(or a nearby oryx) or die. Whether one is predator or prey or the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, when the sun comes up you had better be running. What is critical is not just speed but velocity - moving in the correct direction. Calculating a Nash equilibrium for the 15 or 16 (depending on how one counts Côte d’Ivoire) Trans-Nigerene nations is more complex than antelope cladistics. For Western African nations near the Niger River, economic cooperation is the only long-term alternative in the face of AIDS moving north and the Sahara Desert moving south. What is needed is one nation to move in the right direction. Our numbers indicate Burkina Faso could be that nation.
