Suppose, Sherlockians, the dog had disappeared prior to Holmes' arrival. Bogoslof Island might have exploded near the timeframe
(accounts are unclear), but it is too far north to be recorded in Antarctic ice. Likewise, if Thompson Island existed, and exploded in 
the timeframe, it would be too far south to be recorded in Greenland. Most other islands disappearances are due to sea level change
