Calaveras Unified School District |
The County of Calaveras is a small (about 1,000 square
miles) political division of the |
American state of California. The population is about
45,000 - in 2015 the County of |
Calaveras achieved some infamy for being the American
county with the highest suicide |
rate per capita. The county seat and only town is San
Andreas - the population may still |
be over 3,000. The County of Calaveras is home to five
school districts - Calaveras Unified |
School District has about 2900 students: 95% go to one
of five kindergarten to fifth grade |
elementary schools; one sixth grade to eighth
grade intermediate school and one ninth grade |
to twelfth grade high school. There are no colleges in
the County of Calaveras. |
For most school districts funding comes from the State
of California. Similarly, for most |
school districts about 85% of expenses are salaries and
benefits for teachers and staff. |
As of 2/10/2024 the State of California expects a revenue
shortfall of about $73
Billion. |
That would be for a budget of about $225 Billion.
Should State of California revenues |
continue to
disappoint the current estimate is that Calaveras Unified School
District will |
itself have a revenue
shortfall of $4.8 million.
Some termination notices, quaintly known as |
pink slips, have already been sent to teachers. |
Analytical work done some years ago strongly suggested that 'C'
schools like those in Calaveras |
Unified School District never recover from significant teacher
layoffs as measured by academic |
achievement scores. So a suggestion was made that school
closures, program cuts, teacher |
firings, transportation reductions and similar damage could be
avoided if the venerable Chinese |
martial art of Tai Chi Chuan were taught to some of the students enrolled in
special education. |
