Buddha's Warrior
Pounds the Mortar |
|
Buddha's Warrior
Pounds the Mortar is one of the few movements in Chen Family
style to have an |
overtly religious name. Buddha's Warrior Pounds the Mortar
is an important movement both in
|
terms of its placement and because it is found twice in 18
Movements, four times in Lao Jia (Old |
Frame),
four times in Xin Jia (New Frame), twice in Cannon Fist and
three times in Xin Jia #2. |
Buddha's Warrior
Pounds the Mortar is a signature movement - once you do it
EVERYONE |
knows that they
are watching Chen style. |
When we are doing
an exhibition and dancing in series it means each person on the
stage does a |
single movement.
So the student on your left does single whip, then you do single
whip, then the |
student on your
right does single whip ... until we reach the end of the line.
If the Single Whip |
was movement 26,
51 or 61 in Lao Jia OR 29, 56 or 69 in Xin Jia then the
last student on the end |
does Wave Hands
Like Clouds. Gradually that move works its way to you from your
right. |
However, if the
next movemet is Buddha's Warrior Pounds the Mortar everybody
does it in parallel. |
That means the
whole line at the same time - the intent is to jolt the
audience. We will tease them |
later. |
In the more
theatric version of Buddha's Warrior Pounds the Mortar there's a
little extra footwork. |
As you lift the
right leg so the thigh is parallel to the ground you alos rise
up with the left foot |
so the left heel
is clear of the ground. Note the straightahead as opposed to
well-turned ankle. |
