Prelude #16

Theme: Hexagram:
E♭major    Yu "an eagerness to begin"

There are only four rules

1. The teacher teaches, the students learn. Most of what is taught is sixteen sets - ten with weapons and six without - that form the bulk of the Chen Family style as practiced by Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei. Four tai chi tools are taught - ruler, ball, bang and bent bang - as well as nine Qigong routines. Sets from other arts are taught from time to time, sometimes by outside instructors.
Our promise is to teach what we know: 100%, no secrets, no limits.
Your promise to yourself, to your classmates, to your family and to your teachers is you give your best effort 100% of the time.
Very simple. Very clear.
2. Practice using the Four Gos: Go soft, Go Slow; Go Low and Go Again
3. Keep in mind the Four Respects: respect yourself, your extended family, the art and the weapons. This is a martial art. The weapons, the punches and the kicks were all designed and have been refined to take the life of an enemy, should you decide to do so.
Part of respecting a weapon is to understand that when you practice with a sword, the sword sharpens you.
In a similar manner, for hundreds of years people all over the world have spent a lot of time and effort to preserve and improve this art. The extended Chen family takes those responsibilities very seriously. Since you are now in the family, you should too.

4. No fighting.
Not in class. Not at home. Not at school.

There is one important exception: if you are attacked, do not lose.
