Currently, we are unable to obtain tallies for total clergy (all denominations) for Puerto Rico but the statistics for Roman Catholics (about 70% of the population) are 177 parishes; 198 priests; 200 permanent deacons; 121 male religious and 387 female religious. In our experience, clergy have far more influence than their numbers would suggest. For many reasons they and the churches need to be safeguarded.
