Teakettles

We have been abusing coffee percolators from Farberware as teakettles for time out of mind. As noted previously, we don’t offer coffee or even most teas to students as caffeine usually does not mix well with their medications. At any rate, in the spirit of Tai Chi Chuan, we have a soft spot for established technologies that work in an exemplary manner. For the curious, the blue top fits into the black ring and then screws into the top. S W Farberware Inc (now on the web as http://www.farberwarecookware.com) was started by a Russian immigrant, Simon Farber, in New York City in 1897. Initially selling gift trays and racks, they expanded into peddling matches in 1900. For our younger readers, there were multiple kinds of matches sold back then – necessary for lighting lamps, stoves, heaters, cigarettes … His sons Milton and Isadore and nephew Sam joined the company, which greatly expanded its offerings to include many kitchenware products. A small part of their current output is seen below

It is reasonable to expect that martial arts classes featuring very large individuals (6’6″ and 275 pounds) who are not always dextrous and who may be subject to moments of emotion will be hard on equipment. Even non-combatant tea kettles are no exception. Despite a lot of tea-steeping and washing there have been no (zero) kettle failures. We have not had a handle break, although I privately view that as inevitable. Somewhat ironically, since we do no percolation, what broke was small piece at the top. I wanted to just glue it with some epoxy but the kitchen staff vetoed that immediately.
