As of October 2017 I have yet to find
any indication what martial art or arts the Ma Du Dao might be
part of. I had some hopes it was one of the 53 weapons of Choy
Li Fut, but that does not seem to be the case. So far, no
indication the weapon is from one of the Mantis styles either.
Personally, I think the horse blocking knife I have is
mis-built: the hands are too close together and too close to
the blade. If it is important that there be enough shaft
below the hands to reach the ground, then I
would vote for
more shaft between the blade and the leading hand. From a
teaching/consistency point of view it seems to me that the hand
guards on butterfly wing, Sun Moon spear and this weapon should
cause the hands to be a tai chi bang distance apart. My feeling
is the hand guards here cause the hands to be a tai chi ruler
distance apart, which is too close. Leverage gets limited.
However, being more distant might cause a gap between the hand
guards - right on your centerline.
If anyone knows the name of the part of the handle the crescents
protect I would be grateful. Or, for that matter, where the
crescents came from historically. |
