I-MAG STS
Generally, what gets tallied during an epidemic are (1) how many deaths and (2) how many cases
usually by country or sometimes by sub-country. For both deaths and cases the tallies
can include (A) confirmed by a laboratory; (B) confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain
reaction (RT-PCR); (C) diagnosed by a physician or (D) suspected. There are currently five known
Ebola virus strains: Zaire, Sudan, Bundibugyo, Tai Forest and Reston (no damage to humans yet).
What does NOT get tallied is how many health care workers participated and for how many days.
Nor is there much effort to follow up with survivors or to indicate what happens to orphans.
Currently, there is little or no effort to test human DNA to see if there is any genetic factor that
might influence the chance of a contact becoming infected or an infected person not dying.
