Generally,
what gets tallied during an epidemic are (1) how many deaths and
(2) how
many cases |
usually by
country or sometimes by sub-country. For both deaths and cases
the tallies |
can include
(A) confirmed by a laboratory; (B) confirmed by reverse transcription
polymerase chain |
reaction (RT-PCR);
(C) diagnosed by a physician or (D) suspected.
There are currently five known |
Ebola virus
strains: Zaire, Sudan, Bundibugyo, Tai Forest
and Reston (no damage to humans yet). |
What does
NOT get tallied is how many health care workers participated and
for how many days. |
Nor is
there much effort to follow up with survivors or to indicate
what happens to orphans. |
Currently, there
is little or no effort to test human DNA to see if there is any
genetic factor that |
might influence
the chance of a contact becoming infected or an infected person
not dying. |
