There is evidence (a complete machine) of a complete two person lathe from Egypt c 1430 BCE.
There has been a similar but smaller and less complete machine excavated in Sumeria. As far
as I am aware, there is no evidence that ancient Chinese or Indian craftspeople used lathes.
But Stuart King, an English expert on older technologies, is not alone in the considered opinion 
that the symmetry of too many Chinese artifacts could not be achieved without rotational force.

Usually, with Chinese sword (jian) handles the shape is NOT circular because an oblong shape 
helps you understand where the cutting edges of the blades are. You wish to avoid a flat hit.
Correct orientation is even more important with a saber (dao) because it has just one edge.
