For those who are not ardent fans
of US Navy history, the USS
California was a Tennessee class
battleship built in 1915 at Mare
Island shipyards northeast of San
Francisco. Her main batteries were
12 14 inch guns. She was the Pacific
Fleet's flagship for twenty years.
BB-44 was sunk at Pearl Harbor
with losses of 100 crew killed and
62 injured. She was refloated and
repaired and eventually earned
seven battle stars during World
War II. She was deactivated in 1946
and scrapped in 1959. Her bell is
preserved in Sacramento. We
recommend Daniel Madsen's
Resurrection - Salvaging the Battle
Fleet at Pearl Harbor
. and
Theodore C. Mason's
Battleship
Sailor.

The question now is, is it 1942 and
California will get resurrected OR
1946 and California will be
scrapped.
