Other USS Californias
Third USS California. 58 feet long; used to
patrol the Bay near San Francisco 1917-1918.
Second USS California. Listed as ACR6 - an armored
cruiser of the Pennsylvania class.  504 feet long; she
was built in 1902 in San Francisco. Renamed
USS San
Diego
in 1914. Eventually used on Atlantic convoy duty
near New York City in late 1917. She was sunk,
probably by a mine, on July 19th off Patchogue (Long
Island), with a loss of 6 crew.  The mine was attributed
to
U-156 which had a short but successful career and
which sank with all hands after hitting a mine
September 25, 1918 returning to Germany. The
USS
San Diego
was the only major US warship lost in WWI:
Battleship BB-22
USS Minnesota was damaged by a
mine; destroyer DD-61
USS Jacob Jones  was sunk by
U-53 (which survived the war) and destroyer DD-43
USS Cassin was damaged by U-61 (which did not).
Sixth USS California. CGN-36. 596 feet long;
built in 1970; scrapped in 2000.
