Newest USS California
is a Virginia-class fast attack submarine (SSN-781) and is in active
service as of 2023-09-27
Fourth USS California. Later renamed to
USS Hauoli. She was built in 1903 and
purchased from Clara B. Stocker of New
York City in August 1917. She was
commissioned December 24 after being
outfitted as an armed patrol craft assigned
to New York City waterways. Later, it was
assigned to Thomas A. Edison so that he
could conduct underwater listening
experiments as an aid to countering
submarines. Sold to Denton Shore Lumber
Co., Tampa, Florida, 7 September 1920.
