Hiking Mount Whitney 2023

/I/ I had a towel and spare socks.
/J/ I was able to slow down the expected chafing by liberally coating feet and knees with
Gold Bond powder. This was not completely successful for the outside edges of big toes
/K/ I wrung out the wet socks and put them in a plastic bag, making a note to consider using
them to cross again later - if I could get boots off, used socks on my feet, boots back on
...
/L/ I was not looking forward to having to re-cross later on the way down
/1/ there might be more water flowing through
/2/ there would likely be less light.
/3/ Someone following me might dislodge a key boulder.
/4/ As it was, there were several steps with abrupt changes in elevation
/5/ It seemed unlikely that the water could get any colder, but it was also unlikely
to get any warmer.
/6/ The air might well be
colder.
/7/ I would be very tired - both brain and legs
/8/ Rocks might not have symmetric stability
/M/ I wrote a reminder to myself to ask any advice on how a solo hiker should cross?
/N/ How about crossing by a group? What would a military patrol do? Bundles of branches?
/O/ It was not obvious that even if I had two heavy plastic bags that tying one around each leg would have helped. I was very unhappy that I had no glimmerings that I would face this problem
- twice
/P/ Taking off boots and pants did not seem like a great idea at the time. A second pair of boots would be too much weight
- as fires were not allowed there was no way to dry the only pair of boots. Maybe a second pair of pants should be packed instead of left in the car. The pants I was wearing would likely have dried pretty quickly only had it been hot outside.
