Hiking Mount Whitney 2023

/Q/ In a military scenario any knives, guns or ammunition would have had to be checked, dried and lubricated.
/R/Verify that any communications gear is able to function when wet
and afterwards.
/S/ Similarly, in a military scenario a stream such as this one is an ideal ambush site.
/1/ A squad leader would need to send a scout or two ahead to assess the situation.
/2/ Standard doctrine is to secure fields of fire up and down the stream on the near side
/3/ Then send across two members to secure similar positions on the far side
/4/ Send a scout or two forward past the far side members
/5/ Expose the bulk of the squad during crossing. It is unclear unbraided or
braided paracord would help
/6/ Have the near side pair cross
/7/ reassemble in appropriate line of march formation
/8/ get away from the stream
and its noise - hand signals would have to be confirmed in advance
/9/ dry off; have a snack;
replenish water; resume forward progress
/T/ Going around a minor obstacle on the trail
/1/ could easily cost four steps perpendicular to the direction of travel to achieve one step in the direction of travel.
/2/ Not beneficial for the areas of slope above the trail.
/3/ These small detours increase up and down movement
/4/ Any mission plan using step counts will be distorted
/U/ Had this been a military event I would likely have been carrying
/1/ multiple weapons,
/2/ ammunition for the various weapons,
/3/ more food,
/4/ a sleeping bag and perhaps some sort of shelter,
/5/ communications gear
/V/ all of which would have made balance crossing the stream more complicated and progress in other challenging terrains more difficult.
/W/ Any enemy assessing this route as very difficult would be correct.
/X/ It would be very thwarting for an enemy to trudge in; prepare and wait only to discover the opposite side had chosen another path.
A counter-ambush might well force the ambushing enemy to retreat across
the stream while under fire
