The late Grandmaster Chen Qingzhou taught ruler, ball and bang as
well as bent bang. There is
the one double DVD of Grandmaster Chen Qingzhou from the
Chinese Wushu Series (ISBN 7-88721-254-5; available from Plum
Publications) teaching various
tools. I know of no (zero) other videos or even rumors of bent
bang so far, but I'd admit there could be millions of people
practicing bent bang in China right now and I'd never know. If
someone said, "Bent bang - why it's been an integral part of
Omeishan arts for centuries ... " I'd likely believe it. I have
seen no evidence of any of the Four Tigers of Chen Family style teaching
or practicing bent bang. Likewise, no evidence of bent bang in
other Tai Chi styles or in any of the arts I have some knowledge
of. I have no idea (yet) if Chen Qingzhou learned the tools from one of the sons
of Chen Fake or someone else. Chen Qingzhou might well have invented the bent bang. As
built by the esteemed Charles Tauber of Canada, the bird's eye maple bent bang pictured
below is about 12 inches end to
end and 1.5 inches in diameter. |
